Fell Running Points
written by Steve Barrett, 1 mth ago
We had an interesting question about running up hills and points.
As you know we have different points scores for running in sand, snow etc this is because it a has physical effect on the running - clearly so do hill but our challenge is to make sure that everybody classes hills in a similar way (without the need for maps and GPS etc) the best way we found is to use the system that the British Fell Runners use to 'grade' different Fells as being either A,B or C. Their system means that if you do a CAT B run in any country it will have the same or simlar amounts of climb and fall.
They class the runs as A,B,C
Ascent categories
Category A
* at least 250 ft (76.2 m) of ascent per mile (1.6 km)
* should not have more than 20% of the race distance on road
* should be at least one mile in length
Category B
* at least 125 ft (38.1 m) of ascent per mile (1.6 km)
* should not have more than 30% of the race distance on road
Category C
* at least 100 ft (30.5 m) of ascent per mile (1.6 km)
* should not have more than 40% of the race distance on road
* should contain some genuine fell terrain.
Like I say this might seem a bit over the top but it's really the best way we have found to establish when a hill is really a hill.
