Who's in charge? There will be some very twitchy people today at the PR company of Kelloggs because their announcement that they were going to reduce the amount of sugar in certain breakfast cereals meet with some tough questions from the morning TV brigade. I watched GM.TV talking to a top man from Kellogg who insisted on calling the mothers of UK children "MOMS" throughout the interview. They are reducing the sugar content by approx 15% in some cereals aimed at children which is good n ... Num comments: 1 |
Look look I'm tweeting on holidayWhen is a holiday not a holiday? When there is a smart phone in your bag. At this time of year a few years ago going on holiday would have meant just that - off you went for two weeks then when you came back you could tell everybody about it in about 5 mins, but now I've noticed a trend on facebook and twitter to log the every move you make from sat on runway (phone back on in 2.5hours) to hungover by pool with pictures! Great if that what makes you feel good do it but I've also noticed ... Num comments: 2 |
Team GB bring home the medalsIt seems that in the summer months there is always the next big sporting event taking it's turn on the TV. I can take or leave the tennis and the football is best forgotten but when it is the turn of athletics I'm glued to the box. Most of the athletes in the team could walk down any high street and not get noticed (unlike our soccer players) but then they step out onto the athletics track in Barcelona in some spikes and a bit of lycra and do their job - you don't hear them blaming the ... |

When is obese not obese?I hear in the news that some people are being offended by Dr's who call them obese rather than saying they are 'a bit fat'. Poor old doctors can't win can they, obesity isn't 'caught' like a virus it's the result of over eating and lack of exercise so it must be really hard for them to sit there with people with worn out joints, diabetes and heart problems who are focused on these conditions but don't see the connection with their weight - so lets be clear, doctors only use terms like obese ... Fell Running PointsWe had an interesting question about running up hills and points. As you know we have different points scores for running in sand, snow etc this is because it a has physical effect on the running - clearly so do hill but our challenge is to make sure that everybody classes hills in a similar way (without the need for maps and GPS etc) the best way we found is to use the system that the British Fell Runners use to 'grade' different Fells as being either A,B or C. Their system means that ... |
Staying trim whilst pregnantYou often find in the summer months that you get what they call a slow news day, but today the BBC lead with the increasing problems of more women being obese before and during pregnancy. Everybody will have heard the claims that you need to 'eat for two' but the guidelines are really clear that 2000 cals a day is what a mother and unborn baby need to stay healthy and grow, that's the same figure as women who aren't pregnant or breastfeeding. It also made the suggestion that women who have ... |
BBQ season gets healthyA barbeque can seem a little daunting if you are on a diet, but you shouldn't get distressed as there are plenty of healthy foods that taste great on the grill. So this summer don't say no to a barbeque at your pals, just pack a few alternatives for you all to enjoy. The barbeque is usually where the boys get off the sofa and get cooking, bringing copious amounts of fatty meat with them. One of the more simple rules of eating is to have a colourful plate to make sure you are getting a bala ... Num comments: 1 |
Ways to earn your points - boxerciseThere are few things that are tougher than boxing, but it's also one of the most fun and exhilarating ways to get your points. If you need to let off steam there is nothing better, but with boxercise you get all the benefits without actually sparring and getting punched up. Although you won't actually find yourself fighting, many classes will take you through a full boxer's fitness plan. This may involve skipping ropes, sit-ups, sprinting and of course a spot of boxing. That's right - you w ... Num comments: 2 |
British women eat badly says reportA new review has shown that British women aren't eating well enough. They are missing out on vital nutrients and could be leaving themselves open to illness and fatigue - so girls, eat your greens! It's no longer a surprise that we aren't eating well, but it's worth seeing exactly what we are missing out on and what we are simply having too much of. These latest reports were simply a review of 100 other surveys, so with so much data it's likely to be quite accurate - but it doesn't make for ... Num comments: 2 |
Tabloids announce that 'being fat doesn't make you ill'In the often lurid world of the UK tabloid papers last week there was a claim that "Accepted medical wisdom that overweight people are more susceptible to diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure is a myth," which seems rather astonishing. This seems like some seriously wishful thinking, so we took a much closer look. A survey of 18,000 people was conducted by the Brigham Young University in the USA and it's fair to say that the newspapers have taken this one right out of c ... |
Diet vs ExerciseOne of the big mysteries of fitness is establishing what matters most - dieting or exercising. Which will have the greater effect on your health, if any? In a perfect world you'd be eating well and exercising often all the time, but which should be your priority? There have been studies that look at the difference between losing weight through dieting and shedding the pounds through working out, some of which only look to the short term. It seems that dieting has more of an immediate affect ... Num comments: 1 |
The World Cup of junk foodIt's certainly nothing new, but there are calls for the football World Cup to drop its reliance on sponsors who sell unhealthy food and drink. McDonalds, Coca Cola and Budweiser are amongst the sponsors of the FIFA World Cup 2010 that starts in just over a week's time, so the message is a little late! The World Cancer Research Fund has spoken out over the issue of unhealthy sponsors, although it is hardly new news. Food, drink and tobacco have long been uncomfortable partners with sport but ... |
Robert Downey Jnr - man of ironIt's not often that you can honestly say big movie stars really earn their mega-money. One of the rare cases where they have had to do more than learn their lines and turn on the charm is Robert Downey Jnr in Iron Man 2. The reinvigorated Hollywood veteran had to build muscle to reprise his role as the metal-clad hero. Where's the big deal in that? The fact that there was only two months between filming Sherlock Holmes and the new Iron Man meant that Downey Jnr had to first lose weight to pl ... Num comments: 1 |

It may not feel like it, but you can always find the time to exercise - even if you must squeeze it into your lunch break. Why is stretching so important? One of the rules of working out is to stretch properly once you've finished sweating it out, but it's too easy to neglect your full cooling-down routine. Even when you have done all your exercises by the book it's so easy to whizz through your stretches without doing them right, while other folk just won't bother at all. You've just done the serious stuff and all you want to do is to get changed and relax, but skipping your stretches isn't a wise move. You shouldn't just be stretching post- ... Num comments: 2 |
Can veggies give you a tan?If you want to get a tan this summer then don't go out in the garden, just spend more time in the kitchen! It seems that the food we eat doesn't just have an effect on how clear your skin is, it's also the secret behind how tanned your skin can get too. This is good news if you won't dare to bare until you are sure that you won't be as pale as a ghost when you are on the beach. It also explains how some folk never lose their lovely complexion all year round. Scientists at Scotland's St And ... Num comments: 2 |
Ways to earn points - tennisIt's strawberries and cream time again as the tennis season gets back into full swing. It's a relaxing game to watch, but for those on the court it's another story. A game of tennis is incredibly demanding on the players; speed, strength, stamina and sheer power are all needed to play at the top level. It's no different for you or me either, even if you are no Roger Federer. A tennis professional's training routine isn't just about the stamina that's needed to stay on court for hours under ... Fat tax - should we charge bad eaters? In the ongoing fight against obesity the latest weapon could be a tax on fatty and sugary foods, but would you just forget about the costs and give in to your sweet tooth anyway? Is this a good idea to help pay for the cost of obesity-related illness or is it just another way to boost government coffers by taxing the poor? In Britain the Food Standards Agency has proposed a tax to processed foods, snacks, fizzy drinks and even dairy products. This is nothing new though, plenty of countries ... Num comments: 2 |
So Samantha - Free wheelingSince getting my crazy pooch I've never been so active. Ernest runs rings around me but I've never felt such motivation to get out there and exercise. Mind you, I always thought the gym was pricey but a dog is much more expensive! Still, you can't cuddle a treadmill, can you? Anyway, now I've started to go to the park twice a day with him I needed somewhere new to do my exercise, I'm easily bored and needed a change of scenery to try and reinvigorate my fitness efforts. I realised that I wo ... Num comments: 1 |

Is sitting down the new working out? Some newspapers have been suggesting that the 'key to losing weight' is putting your feet up! It may sound like a dream come true, but it seems that it is nothing more than wishful thinking. This story claims that our bodies react differently under stress, triggering us to eat more, so the papers advice we all just have a nice sit down so as to avoid getting fat! Obviously this is at odds with 99% of scientific advice which is to keep active and eating well, so why did the papers run with t ... Num comments: 1 |
