caught in my own trap

It is happening again!

My active periods alernate with periods of complete sedentarism & depression. When I am active again it is even harder than before. This finally led to another depression and then to another non-active period. I cant sleep properly and feel dizzy&sleepy all day. It is happening again and again: 2 weeks of going at the gym and exercising at home with feelfit and then 2 weeks of sedentarism & depression (and I tend to gain even more weight!) I am 33, overweight, emotional and have no idea what to!

Hey Alina! A few months ago I discovered the Inside Out Weightloss Podcast by Renee Stephens. She has a very different approach, examining the reasons why we are overweight and underexercising in the first place. You might want to check her out, she is on iTunes. Otherwise I can only say: Love and accept yourself the way you are. If you do you will WANT to take great care of yourself, exercising, eating well, get enough sleep etc. Take good care!

Hey Alina friends aren't everything, don't beat yourself up, non of us are perfect and we can all improve, it just takes time and an open mind and willingness to change. x

Caroline Shipsey, Caroline Laythorpe and Steve - thank you so much for you support. I have been in a holiday in Europe, now I'm back to the UK and hopefully I'll hit the gym tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, I don't have too many friends, that's why sometimes is so easy to let depression conquer. Hope everything is ok with you and you enjoy the British sun!

Lastly (I waffle, I know), it's always easier when you work out with other people. If your mates won't do it then find a club with other like minded people. Then tell your mates to sod off. Also, persevere if it seems wrong - I went through about 5 clubs until I found one with nice people and not bitchy women. Find out what works for you and have loads and loads of fun with it :o) Cari xx

Part II. It seems to me is you're stuck in this mental rut where you *must* go to the gym. So what happens is boredom and no stimulation. You're depressed about going gym because it's depressing going there doing the same thing 5 days a week. Forgive me if I'm getting this wrong. What works for me is doing different exercises different days of the week. Monday Body Pump, Tues Running Club, Weds Dog Agility, Thurs Yoga. I'm also getting interaction with others which really boosts my mood.

Hi Alina. Gosh, there's so much to say. Remember - you're not alone in this; 1 in 4 people suffer from depression or other mental illness. And a very few of those people actually get the motivation to exercise. When you are feeling low, make sure you get moving before you manage to sit down! Even if it's just a walk round the block. Otherwise you will sink into that damn sofa for the rest of the day/two days/week etc. ... ... ... cont'd...

part 2.Since joining Feelfit I've concentrated on my points, only Feelfit workouts and the results/effect is much more noticeable - consistently more energy rather than highs and lows, weight loss and significantly more toned body, especially my legs.Checking in here and contributing helps me to maintain focus & interest, hopefully help others along the way.I can relate to your cycle of depression/lethargy & know how hard it is to stay up.You've got lots of support here so I hope it helps.Caroline

Hi Alina, I'm intrigued by your post :-) When you say you continued your "gym routine" do you mean actually attending the gym as opposed to using Feelfit workouts? I started going to the gym after a couple of years break on 1st January and continued until end of April, 4months of intensive 1-1 and a half hour sessions 4 times a week.I did lose some weight but generally not much change in shape which was slightly disappointing, though I was feeling much better in myself. cont....

Sent 1 mth agoSteve Barrett says:
So you 'only ended up more tone and with a nicer shape'! If you want to check things with a DR start with your GP, they are best placed to put you on to the right specialist in the area and will run through signs and symptoms first rather than charging you lots of money for test which is what will happen if you go private. Hello, again. Even if I did not visit Feelfit very often, I continued my gym routine, ~5 days per week. Also sauna sessions after workouts. No result at all. Just toning and somehow a different/nicer shape of my body/mainly legs&butt. But that's all. No considerable weight loss (no more than 8.8 pounds/which I put back on during the menstrual period).Consider consulting a doctor for medical support (tyroid syndrome/hormone etc.).Any suggestions related to specialists/clinics in the North-West?

Thank you, Leanne, I think I've recently reached the same conclusion as well: it is not the end of the world. :) The most important thing is to get back on the right track as soon as possible and without any self-punishing attitude. :) Thank you for your message. Louise, thanks for your message, too. Balance is the key :)

Hi Alina, ive had a read through this post and can sympathise with you. I used to go through periods of not being active and be really hard on myself if i skipped a couple of days working out which just made me feel more depressed. In the past few months ive learned that if i skip a couple of days working out it really isnt the end of the world, im still fit and my body actually thanks me for the rest so im totally fired up or the next training session. Good luck!

Hey Alina, I am my own worst enemy I throw myself into exercise with so much enthusiasm and then burn myself out. I have learned that I have to moderate my exercise now...I don't exercise to exhaustion like I used to and even though its hard because I know I can do a lot more in one session..I stick to moderate exercise as I can keep this going. I just try to do half an hour every day. I hope your exercise routine balances out for you.

I think it is useless to say I had another 5-day period in which I did not exercise, just walking and the usual squats when photographing (I went to a car show and I took 700 photos of cars which means at least 500 squats in one day) but now I am back on the track with my usual routine, I think this tread will fluctuate in the same way until the moment exercising will become natural for me as brushing teeth or opening of the e-mail. :(

THANK YOU so much, Guna and Steve, I feel dizzy (the effect of staying in front of the laptop) BUT a walk is a good idea; we have a great reservation park here, Pennington Flash (Lancashire), and HOPEFULLY around 7pm I might try at least one Feelfit workout!Guna, indeed,I always feel great after exercising, it is just harder to start exercising on busy days (and this makes me depressive!). Thanks, I think I just need to talk to you, guys, confessing about my weak points makes me stronger!

Chief ass kicker here! I've got size 11 feet so highly qualified. Alina, OK lets think about this you have to work till 5 - then what? It's really hard all day looking at a tiny screen so YOU have to get out after work and switch off your phone and WALK,not sure where you are but get to a green space and just zone out of all the buzz around you and Breath the air. Find some grass take off your shoes and walk barefoot - exercise is regeneration not just punishment. Steve B x

one tip what works for me- do some exercises/workout the FIRST thing, when come to home! Othervise you would start to do other things and then feel like to tired for exercises... Not alow yourself to think, just do it! Already in your mind pick a wourkout what you chould do, and then do it! Good luck, hope it helps... I after work should run 10km, I and I vill no mater what :)

30 days since my first message here and as you could see I was doing great. Until yesterday when due to some projects, I had to stay in front of my laptop AGAIN and in the evening I was too tired to DO something, anything, for my health. Today it is almost the same, I have to work until 5 pm, I am not satisfied with this situation. I feel AWFUL for not going at the gym/doing a workout. I told you it would happen again one day!I know it sounds like moaning but please, can somebody kick my ass?!

Alina, I'm glad you're better now, really, that's great news! About myself, I'm trying to do my best, but some days I have had to rest instead exercising (despite I try not to stop, walking, doing housework...). I still need to go slowly... but I hope to be on the right way. Thanks for your interest, and good luck!

Thank you, Steve. My dream is to be able to run with the feelfit team one day in a 5k or smth (it really doesn't matter if it will be next year or in 2 years, in this case THE PATH is even more important than the goal in itself!). Thank you for, Veronika, I do need some luck. Jay, thanks - as I said in the thread you mentioned, I think I write the story now so ... no laptop for me, I have to get this bum moving!(I do not receive such encouragements outside feelfit, thank you again!)

Hi Alina - This is great news, big well done to you!! Steve has created a thread called 'Feelfit Really Works', he is looking for members to post their success stories. If you don't mind please can you do a quick post in this new thread, you are a great example of how Feelfit can be of huge benefit if used properly, I think your story would be a great inspiration to others. Thanks, Jay
